Jekyll Island: The Nearest Faraway Place

As a tribute to the Island's allurement, the Jekyll Island Authority has published Jekyll Island The Nearest Faraway Place, a coffee table book recognizing the inspired talent of residents and guests and their ability to capture unique perspectives of our cherished Island. During the period of March through September 2010, a competition was conducted to discover photographs of, and poems about, Jekyll Island. Scenic images and inspiring narratives portraying Jekyll's beach and marsh, sunrise and sunsets, wildlife, nature, historic landmarks, and views from above were sought for inclusion in this project. Submissions included 70 from Georgia, 17 from different states, 4 from Canada and 1 from the United Kingdom. Results of the competition were announced and the winning selections are featured in the commemorative publication.

Jekyll Island The Nearest Faraway Place is now currently available at the Visitor Information Center, the Commissary, the Jekyll Island Book Store, the Jekyll Island Museum Store, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and Hattie's Books in Brunswick.

Happy Fall from Oceanside Inn and Suites!

Fall is in the air and we couldn't be happier here at Oceanside Inn and Suites!  This is my favorite time of the year, especially the months of October and November.   The weather is just perfect for bike riding, beach walks, and bird watching.  The beaches aren't crowded and the weather is still nice enough to do alittle sunbathing!  Just imagine a good book, your beach chair, and a margarita from The SandBar and Grill.....what a perfect day!

Here are a few of my favorite things about Jekyll in the fall...
*Cool mornings and evenings
*Bike riding
*Picnics
*Walking on the beach
*Watching the sunrise
*GA/FL golf tournament
*GA/FL Weekend
*Shrimp & Grits Festival
*Sitting outside at the Rah Bar
*Wednesday night Trivia at The SandBar and Grill
*Turtleween
*Bird watching
*The Pier
*Outdoor weddings

What are your favorite things about the fall?

2011 Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival

The 2011 Jekyll Island Shrimp and Grits Festival is right around the corner and my stomach is already growling!  Grits are a staple in the South and pairing them with shrimp makes just about the most perfect meal!  You can't get any more coastal than this delicious dish.

Mark your calendar for September 16-18, 2011 in the Jekyll Island Historic District.  The weekend features an amateur and professional shrimp & grits cooking competition, shrimp boat tours, cooking demonstrations, book signings, a large arts and crafts vendor village, live entertainment, and a kid-friendly fun zone.

Call 866-553-5955 to make your room reservations because this festival is a "must-do" on Jekyll Island!
